The Four Great Beauties of China refer to Xi Shi from the Spring and Autumn period, Wang Zhaojun from the Western Han dynasty, Diao Chan from the late Eastern Han to the Three Kingdoms period, and Yang Yuhuan (Yang Guifei) from the Tang dynasty. They are renowned for their beauty, described by the phrase "沉魚落雁之容,閉月羞花之貌" (which translates to "a beauty that sinks fish and drops wild geese, a face that hides the moon and shames flowers"). These eight characters correspond to historical anecdotes about them.
The Four Beauties and Their Associated Anecdotes:
Xi Shi (沉魚): While washing silk by the river, fish in the water were so captivated by her beauty that they forgot to swim and sank to the bottom.
Wang Zhaojun (落雁): While departing to marry a foreign leader, she played a tune on her lute, and the wild geese in the sky, upon seeing her beauty, forgot to flap their wings and fell to the ground.
Diao Chan (閉月): While worshipping the moon in a garden, a gentle breeze blew away the clouds, and people said that the moon, startled by her beauty, hid itself.
Yang Guifei (羞花): While admiring flowers in a garden, her beauty caused the flowers to lower their heads in shyness.
These four women are not only celebrated for their stunning appearances but also for the stories that reflect the ancient Chinese ideals of beauty and cultural values.
